Sat down with Martin Luther for about 15 seconds to ask a few questions just in time for Reformation Day:
What’s the hardest thing for you to do in life?
Believe the gospel.
How much do you think you truly understand it?
First-grade level.
But what about those who say they grasp it completely?
Nothing could be more detrimental.
Why is it so hard for you to believe in God’s lavish grace?
It is counter-intuitive.
When is it most difficult to believe God loves you?
When I’m aware of my sinfulness
Why doesn’t God cause us to fully believe that he’s gracious?
We would be so overcome with joy that we would either stop doing anything else in life or we would explode for joy.
What is faith?
Seeing and taking hold of Christ.
Just how important is that to do?
“If Christ is lost sight of, everything is over.” (Works, vol.26, p.356)
