For those of you who have been a part of Grace Church for over a year, you probably have many, many reasons to give thanks to God for the McGarvey family. Chris McGarvey, one of the pastors at Grace Church for several years, is now serving at Bethel Baptist in Wilmington, Delaware.
Chris is a faithful brother, friend, and pastor. Who could count the thousands of hours he gave himself to prayer and the ministry of the word (see Acts 6:4)? I can still remember reading through 1 & 2 Timothy as Paul describes what it looks like to be a faithful pastor and thinking, “in so many ways, this is Chris.” The aim of his charge is “love that issues from a pure heart and a good conscience and a sincere faith” (1 Tim 1:5) and he teaches that which is “in accordance with the glorious gospel of the blessed God” (1:11). He sets “an example in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith, in purity” and he keeps a close watch on himself and his teaching so that he and those under his care would be saved (4:11, 16).
We are to honor men like this (Phil 2:29). And we give thanks to God, for all of this is true of Chris only because Christ’s mercy and grace overflowed for him with the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus (1 Tim 1:13-14).
Thankfully, even for those of us who now live almost 800 miles away, we can still benefit from some of his ministry. Chris has recently started a blog. It’s called Re:flection… “because we’re all little reflectors giving off the light of what we love.”
