Growing by directing our chief attention to the gospel

“Let us therefore bear in mind, that the entire gospel consists mainly in the death and resurrection of Christ, so that we must direct our chief attention to this, if we would desire, in a right and orderly manner, to make progress in the gospel – nay more, if we would not remain barren and unfruitful (2 Pet 1:8)”

John Calvin, Commentary on 1 Corinthians 15:10.

We will direct our minds to a lot of things today.  If we want to grow in our understanding of the gospel and if we want to bear fruit today, we need to direct our chief attention to the death and resurrection of Jesus. We don’t become holy by directing our chief attention to becoming holy, but by directing it the truly holy one dying for us unholy sinners and raising again to give us new life in him.

It’s good Friday. Let’s feel ourselves to be as sinful as we are but direct our chief attention to the cross and feel ourselves to be as accepted as we are in Christ.
