God is Out to Please His Creatures

“Creation…tells us of God’s goodness.  The rich abundance and variety of created goods, in particular, tells us that God is out to please his creatures… The earths abundance of fruits isn’t strictly necessary to sustain animal and human life… given apples, we could probably have gotten along without pears.”

Cornelius Plantinga, Engaging God’s World, 35-36, speaking about Calvin’s view of God’s goodness in creation.

The next time you eat a pear, just remember that apples would have been enough. Your pear (or any other fruit) is sure evidence that God is out to please you.
