My observation is that most believers who grasp the importance of spiritual transformation tend to focus more on the sins we need to put off than the traits we need to put on. Yet Christ said, “By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another” (John 13:35).
The watching world is not impressed by what we don’t do; rather, people may be more impressed if they see us loving one another and even loving them! (The Transforming Power of the Gospel, 162).
That last line is worth reading again.
Bridges, again, on how we become this kind of inviting, welcoming, loving community:
…we must continually embrace the gospel every day of our lives, for he that is forgiven much loves much. It is the love of Christ for us that constrains us to live no longer for ourselves but for him (160).
